Based in Louth, Lincolnshire, JIRSAS was developed to provide an extensive site packed with information regarding rape, sexual violence, sexual intimidation and sexual assault. A branch of the already established Jigsaw Counselling & Consultancy Services, the team have been working with rape and sexual violence, including sexually violated men, women and children since April 2003 on a daily basis. Statistically the number of sexually violated clients since Jigsaw began is as follows:

As well as working with many other issues involving cases of PTSD we have seen 1,147 clients with sexual violation related incidents in nearly seven years of operation. This number continues to rise on a weekly basis. Figures correct as of 10th August 2009.

There are several ways of working with a person who has been the target of the trauma of rape and/or sexual violence. Recognition that each client, service user or patient is unique and will respond differently is key in the initial stages of assistance. Therefore it is crucial to be able to identify which intervention will suit which individual.

Bearing in mind that each of us is unique, work is always carefully adapted to match the client’s specific need. The interventions that have been shown to be effective for working with survivors of rape and/or sexual violence are as follows:

• Critical Incident Debriefing (CID)
• Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)
• Post Trauma Counselling
• VK Association or Rewind Technique
• Relaxation and/or Visualisation
• Hypnotherapy
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Rape can be a painful and threatening event in a person’s life, the unexpectedness of which cannot be readily incorporated emotionally.
